Apple Snubs Vodafone New Zealand

Update: 7:00am on 27th July (3 days from launch) Vodafone says “no comment at this stage”.

What the hell is going on between Apple and Vodafone New Zealand? Apple’s announcements around the iPad and iPhone 4 launches have almost gone out of their way to ignore and alienate the local carrier.

With the global launches of the iPhone 3G and 3GS, Vodafone had plenty of time to announce the launch themselves, generating plenty of hype and marketing mojo in the process. The iPhone 4 comes out this Friday, and we’ve heard nary a peep from big red.

Today Apple deigned to put out a press release announcing the iPhone 4, devoid of any mention of Vodafone. Apparently you can buy an iPhone 4 direct from Apple or an “authorised reseller“. What gives?

Full release follows:

  1. According to Wired (http://bit.ly/d7kw6V)…

“Unlike the exclusive AT&T carrier-deal in the US, in many countries Apple is making the iPhone available through multiple carriers. This is a lot easier in Europe, as pretty much all telcos use the same GSM technology.”

Maybe this goes for NZ too?

  2. Look for multiple resellers this Friday the same as the iPad not named or favoritism shown by apple. Maybe drop by Noels for instance

  3. Is this PR release a fake??? there is no mention on the Apple site here in NZ or US. The Apple store does not show any pricing!!! Why issue a PR stating that the product will ship in 17 countries and just list the NZ price? I’m hoping the above is true, it’s wicked price for the iPhone 4 compared to the 3GS $1099.00 compared to $1179.00 hmmm too good to be true

  4. The phrase “Storm in a teacup” comes to mind… he he. Look, Apple are massively secretive with everyone, not just Vodafone NZ. Press release doesn’t mention theyre dropping the 16gb/32gb 3GS phones either. But what is this new 3GS they refer to?
