Not much to write about lately. Stayed at home with a feverish young guy today, who was in dire need of distraction, so we visited the Kelly Tarlton’s aquarium attraction here in Auckland.
It’s been a long time since I last visited, and there’s been a heck of a lot of upgrades since then. There’s the very cool ‘Stingray Bay’: an open-topped acrylic wall aquarium full of fish and huge stingrays. It’s quite uncanny, giving you the impression that you’re almost walking amongst the fish and stingrays.
Another interesting installation was a pair of acrylic windows mounted bang on the high tide mark (the aquarium occupies the site of some old sewerage tanks on and under the Auckland waterfront). You can see from the photo that the effect is pretty cool. You can look right across the top of the water to the Auckland city skyline, as the waves lap against the window. It really connects you to the sea outside, and accentuates the ‘underwater’ feeling as you descend a ramp beside the windows to enter the main underwater aquarium tunnels.
All in all, a pretty cool place. Expensive to visit (NZ$24 per adult) but you can get a year’s membership for $60.
